Puerto Rico Hit By 5.9 Magnitude Aftershock

Amid power outages and aftershocks, Puerto Ricans seek safety beneath the stars

Another powerful earthquake hit Puerto Rico on Saturday (January 11) morning. The U.S. Geological Service initially reported the aftershock had a magnitude of 6.0 but later downgraded it to 5.9. It was centered less than ten miles from Guanica, a city on the southwest coast of the island. The area was still cleaning up from previous the quakes, which collapsed hundreds of buildings and knocked out power to residents.

A series of aftershocks have rattled Puerto Rico since a destructive 6.4 magnitude quake rocked the island on January 7. That quake was the largest one to strike the island in over a century.

Many residents have been forced to sleep outside since the quake. Some people are living in outdoor shelters set up by the government, while others, afraid their homes could collapse at any time, pulled their mattresses outside and slept on the street.

At least one person has died, and nine people have been injured in the recent spate of seismic activity that has shaken Puerto Rico since the beginning of the year.
